01Project Title

Development of a digital measurement and control system for hydrometeorological applications

02Brief Project Description

The project focuses on the digitization and modernization of hydrometeorological measurement networks. The aim is to develop a standardized system for collecting, transmitting and processing measurement data. The collected data is automatically transferred to a cloud-based platform and made available there for various applications. This creates a foundation for more efficient collection of hydrometeorological data and its use in water management, environmental monitoring and agriculture.

03Project Objective

The aim of the project is to standardize the construction and operation of hydrometeorological measurement stations and to digitize data collection. Through the development of modern sensor and data transmission technologies, measurement data should be made available faster and more reliably. In addition, a cloud-based infrastructure is being built in which measurement data is collected, analyzed and made available for various applications.

04Innovation
  • Digitization of a statewide hydrometeorological measurement network with around 300 stations
  • Development of a standardized station design for various measurement station types
  • Introduction of redundant data transmission for reliable measurement data availability
  • Integration of measurement stations into a central process control system (SCADA.web)
  • Construction of a cloud-based data infrastructure for the automatic further processing of measurement data
  • Particularly innovative is the combination of technical standardization of measurement stations and a digital data infrastructure that enables near real-time availability of measurement data.
05Why is the project important?

Hydrometeorological measurement networks form the basis for many applications in water management, flood protection and environmental monitoring. However, many existing measurement networks are based on heterogeneous technical solutions, different data formats and partly outdated infrastructure.

  • Limited data availability
  • Delayed data transmission
  • High maintenance effort
  • Limited usability of data for modern analysis methods

At the same time, the demand for high-resolution and timely measurement data is increasing, particularly in connection with increasing extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall or drought periods. The DMeStHyA project addresses these challenges through comprehensive digitization and standardization of a statewide hydrometeorological measurement network.

Technology, Data & Results

In the DMeStHyA project, a holistic technological approach to digitizing the hydrometeorological measurement network was developed.

  • Standardized measurement stations with modular sensors
  • Integrated control cabinet solutions with data logger and communication module
  • Redundant data transmission directly from the measurement station
  • Integration of measurement data into a central process control system
  • Cloud-based storage and further processing of measurement data

With this architecture, measurement data can be automatically collected, monitored and made available in near real-time. In addition, the project includes the modernization and digitization of the large-scale lysimeter facility in Neuenkirchen-St. Arnold.

The data basis of the project consists of hydrometeorological measurement data from the statewide measurement network of LANUK NRW. Recorded data includes:

  • Precipitation
  • Air temperature
  • Humidity
  • Wind direction and speed
  • Global radiation
  • Air pressure

In addition, data from the Neuenkirchen-St. Arnold lysimeter facility is integrated, which provides detailed information on water balance processes in the soil.

The technical architecture connects various components of data collection, transmission and processing:

  • Hydrometeorological measurement stations with standardized sensors
  • Data loggers and communication modules
  • Redundant data transmission
  • Central network control center
  • SCADA.web process control system for monitoring network operations
  • Cloud and database systems for storing and analyzing measurement data

In the DMeStHyA project, the hydrometeorological measurement network in NRW was comprehensively modernized:

  • Modernization of around 230 existing measurement stations
  • Construction of 145 new measurement site locations
  • Establishment of climate reference stations
  • Standardization of technical infrastructure
  • Introduction of central digital operations management
  • Construction of an infrastructure for near real-time availability of measurement data
  • Modernization and digitization of the large-scale lysimeter facility St. Arnold

The digital infrastructure created in the project significantly improves the availability and quality of hydrometeorological data. This results in numerous benefits:

  • Better basis for flood forecasts
  • Support for disaster protection
  • Improvement of hydrological models
  • More efficient operation of hydrometeorological measurement networks
  • Better decision-making basis for authorities and infrastructure operators

The modernized measurement network forms the basis for further research projects such as NIQKI.
